I'm a little behind on reading my posts, but I thought I'd
share my experience(s). I had my frenulum clipped when
I was 17, mostly for orthodontic reasons. I also had
difficulty playing my trombone, performing a technique
called double tonguing (?sp)- rapid staccato notes. The
clipping was done in emerg. by my family dr. under a
local, with dissolving sutures. Boy, was I sore afterwards.
Couldn't eat anything more solid than pudding for a couple
of days. By the way, I wasn't breastfed, my mother tried
but wasn't able to. Probably due to the tongue-tie, but
who cared 40 years ago. One of my three children was
born with a mod tight frenulum. She breastfed beautifully,
I never had sore nipples and I had a great milk supply. I
didn't even realize she was tongue-tied until she too began
orthodontic treatment at age 9, and they wouldn't start until
the frenulum was clipped (both sublingual and the one at
the top gum and upper lip) She still has vivid memories of
the seven needles needed for freezing, the sutures, and the
painful recovery. I often think of this when mothers come
in to our clinic post-frenulum clipping and describe it as a
piece of cake-babe slept right through it and went to breast
right after.
