Dear Lactnetters,
I had a LLL call this morning from a mom who is allergic to ascorbic acid and
Vitamin C - she apparently swells up after eating *any* and normally takes an
antihistimine and sometimes requires cortisone to counter the effects. Her
dr. has told her to eliminate all sources of ascorbic acid from her diet for
an unspecified amount of time to allow her body to "go back to normal levels"
He has told her that this lack will make her milk unacceptable for her 3
month old baby, but he did also warn her that the antihistamine would
deplete her supply. She has tried to give the baby a bottle of abm, but baby
is refusing.
Doc told her to wait until baby got hungry enough!
She wants to continue nursing, but is afraid her milk will be insuficient
(in vitamins and minerals) or in supply, with the meds. Baby was screamming
in background and 2 year old was crying for mom. I told her that her milk
would be ok for baby at least for awhile and she could see if the diet
restrictions worked. That's all I had time for before she had to go.
Anybody ever hear of this before and is there anything else this mom can do
except go on a diet of what she termed "bread and water"?
Please respond soon. By the sound of her voice she's ready to go for the
medication - she mentioned Seldane as the drug of choice. I don't have any
updated med information here.

Thanks for the time,
Lisa
