In our hospital, we try to get the post C/S babies put to breast as soon as
possible after the delivery whenever we can. The head of L&D wants them to
start feeding in the rocovery room and if there are no problems, this is
happening more and more. Otherwise, as soon as they get settled in their
rooms ( about 2.5 hours pp) if I am there, I will help the mom with the
first feed.
I often use the prone position (as in the self-attachment film( as in this
way the mom hardly has to move. A few days ago, I had a mom who managed to
turn on her side and the baby latched beautifully. She was still hooked up
to drips and monitors, but we managed. Once the babies have their first real
meal, they go into an extended sleep, the mom can also rest and she is
feeling a little more empowered having fed her baby. By the second day, she
can already feed sitting up.
What happens when I am not there? I don't want to talk about it.

If the moms are motivated and realize the importance of this first feed,
they will overcome all the obstacles to do it. For this reason, it is so
important to bring up the subject in pre-natal classes.
