Responding to Jennifer's post of Sept 30, who wrote <<strict breast feeding
is also a from of contraception with 98 to 99 percent prevention of
pregnancy in the first six months.>>

STRICT breastfeeding? Do you mean EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding? Exclusive
breastfeeding is a heck of a lot easier and more fun than partial or full
formula feeding!

OK, that was pretty strong. Women tend to personalize "academic" discussions
when those discussions touch on reproductive issues.

There are no advantages, really - lactation is normal for women following
gestation. Suppressing normal functions gets us into trouble. Consider
reframing those comparisons. Formula-feeding mothers stay fatter longer,
suffer more osteoporosis, higher stress hormones, accelerated return to
fertility (who likes to buy more sanitary supplies??), higher risk of
several cancers, higher cholesterol and other consequences. Plus, they're
tied to the kitchen and refrigerator, are more likely to roll over onto
their baby in bed, and have to cope with the baby's stinky poop and barf
that smells bad and stains clothing.

Baby-sitting a formula-fed baby, just one time, was nearly convincing for
me. The prospect of being stuck in the kitchen to feed my baby put me over
the edge. The formula companies have tried to blame breastfeeding for the
fact that babies are rather inconvenient. Formula-feeding makes babies even
MORE inconvenient.
