I have to agree with Teresa Pitman that just because child protective 
services is called in does not mean there is a problem. I've seen CPS 
follow a family who did not have bed frames (their mattresses were on 
the floor), a family where the baby tipped over his walker and got a 
bruised forehead, and several other low risk situations. And I've seen 
them not get involved when they needed to.

I've also known several mothers over the years be threatened with 
psychiatric "consults" in the hospital when they wanted to exclusively 
breastfeed their mildly jaundiced baby, or sign their baby out to go to 
a different hospital for more family centered care.

I also second Rachel Myr's recommendation of The Spirit Catches You and 
You Fall Down. Great, and sad, read.
