Dianne ''Frustrated LC'' wrote: A common theory for many years at our hospital is that a baby uses more
calories to breastfeed than to bottle-feed. It reared its head again today with
a full-term newborn who is having some kidney problems and has been
instructed by the Pediatrician to nurse 10 minutes a side and then take the
baby off and give him formula (even though she is getting overfull) because he
will use too many calories to continue to breastfeed.

Is there any basis for this advice? Any studies out there to the contrary? This
is not the easiest physician to talk to and will certainly want my sources if I
try to discuss it with him.

Dear friends,
I do know that there is research to show that premies at breast have better vital functions (heart rate, breathing rate, saturation and low stress hormone levels) then the same premies at a bottle. I think it was done by dr Bergman.
So if al vitals are better, I don't think this means baby is using more energy, would he?
Ans just the plain basic logical thinking: would it be logical to think that artificoal food and feeding takes less energy than what was naturally provided? Even academically trained people like doctors are not dismissed from logical thinking.
I don't want to practices docor bashing and I sure do not seek HCPs to contradict, but they keep on coming with silly advices, based on nothing but hear-say and tradition and then ''they'' expect ''us'' to come up with the evidence for doning something else. Any LC would easily become frustrated by such practice.

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, LLLL in southern Netherlands
