I remember being SOOOOO greatful that I was nursing Sandrine when she
was 4 months old or so and there was a lot of coverage on the news about
Walkerton, Ontario, having E. coli in their water supply. They were
telling people to boil all water, including water used just to wash
dishes...but this announcement came out a few days after they already
knew the water was contaminated (there was a big cover-up going on).
Had I been one of these "modern" parents using just tap water, or had I
even just taken the risk of washing in unboiled water and immediately
preparing a bottle with boiled water, there is a chance MY baby might
have been one of those ones who got ill, and even died. I don't live in
Walkerton, but this really opened my eyes, as to how it is so easy for
"mistakes" to happen and the most fragile people...babies and the
elderly...end up paying the price often. Fortunately mother nature has
prepared a great solution to the babies in the form of mother's milk
with no supplemental water until after solids are introduced! :-)
