As lactation consultants, we should not be recommending particular brands of
formula. Use of formula is  a medical intervention, sometimes necessary. I
do not recommend brands but instead refer back to the doctor or even call
them myself. I never hesitate to recommend supplementation when it is
needed. Breastmilk is the first choice but when it is not available, then
formula is next. By having the doctor make the formula recommendation, the
point is made that formula is not interchangable with breastmilk but rather
a second choice to be used only as long as needed while breastfeeding is
