Debbi Heffern wrote to Ivy Tech students: Also if you check the AAP's 1997
statement and compare it to the current statement, I think you'll see
they're trying to ease American women into the idea of getting closer to the
WHO recommendation of "shoot for two."

Debbi I love your wording: "ease American women into the idea." IMO, the
AAP Section on Breastfeeding and many other breastfeeding (BF) advocates are
very careful about how they say things about BF that may not be palatable to
the mainstream in our society. Hopefully, that will open more minds to the
idea that BF is for children and not just babies or young toddlers. Then
the moms of breastfeeding children who are 4 years old (or older) will not
hide what they are doing or be afraid of being reported to Child Protection
Services.

The same is true for weaning, i.e., starting fluids other than breastmilk
and starting solids. We need to remember it wasn't long ago that babies
were started on other fluids and solids during the first month of life,
including my 40-year-old daughter. Slowly, we dared to wait until 3 or 4
months; now it is 6 months. Some of us are even brave enough to say 9-12
months (or more) is okay. (Dr. Jay Gordon is one of those brave
pediatricians and occasionally writes about that on LACTNET.) It is hard
for the AAP Section on Breastfeeding to stand up to those MDs in the AAP
Section on Nutrition who still balk at the idea of going more than 4 months.
Most of the pediatricians in my area tell moms to start solids at around 4
months.

I have not seen new AAP recommendations of getting closer to two years of
BF. Is it more that they suggest it is okay to go beyond one year? That is
the latest that I have documentation for. If there is something newer, does
anyone have a link where I can download that? The moms in my LLL group
would appreciate having that in print. Thanks for the heads up.

Warm regards,

Lee
