Last I knew, WIC was a US Department of Agriculture program. How can you
not support American agriculture?? We're lucky here in VT, we get yummy
Cabot Vermont cheddar as part of our WIC allottments while pregnant or
breastfeeding.
I tell parents in my childbirth classes that Vermonters take good care of
mothers and babies --that's what WIC is all about. One of the most
amazing books I've ever read was Safer Childbirth?, the premise of which
is that early prenatal care, MDs for delivery, etc etc etc are not the
bottom line. What makes for healthier deliveries is -- feed the mom.
That's what WIC does, and it's not welfare, it's helping American
farmers as we feed our babies and moms.
(Vermont has one of the highest percents of eligible moms who utilize the
program -- something like 80%, last I knew.)
