Dear lisa
About the inverted nipples and breastfeeding success. I guess "lots"
wouldn't cut it but I could say that I have probably 2 to 3 per month and I
have an average of 160 out patients in the clinic per month. This does not
include the flat nipples, only the truly inverted nipples.
I have had a really tough one with not only inverted nipples but hard
fibrous, edematous areola. Ice backs, warm cloths and temporary nipple
shield use plus pumping got her through 3 months until she could breastfeed
successfully for 7 to 8 months. She also has ver cystic breast and
experienced frequent mastitis and plugged ducts. Now she is feeding her
second child and at three weeks is with no shield use and nolonger pumping.
( She did have awfully edematous areola and breast again from the labour
process (oxytocin I guess) and paniced a bit when her milk came in but all
seems quite OK now since I haven;'t heard from her for several days.

Subject: Need some ammunition- inverted nipples

A colleague of mine wrote the following to me, asking if Lactnetters could
help her out:

"I need a quick clinical estimation from practicing LCs on the bfg success
rate of moms with inverted nipples. I was challenged by a doc today on the
floor. I said there were no studies so he asked about clinical experience.
"

She needs feedback ASAP. Please send responses to Lois: [log in to unmask]

Thanks to anyone who can help her out.

Lisa Marasco, BA, IBCLC
