Further to the many sensible posts about this mom who may or may not have
some yeast involvement, I am reminded also that some women who have had
extreme pain on nursing also develop transient Raynaud's of the nipples
related to it, which gradually subsides over time -- sometimes not all that
quickly, either -- after the underlying yeast, trauma, or whatever is
resolved. This can also feel "shards of glass" like to some mothers,
though in my limited experience I think usually more in the nipple rather
than within the breast. I think it also tends to appear more with nursing
than with pumping, since there is more of a temperature contrast between the
baby's warm little mouth and the ambient air before and afterward; which
again sounds like part of this mother's pattern, perhaps. But the original
post didn't mention anything about blanching or the lack of it -- might be
worth asking the mother.
