Dear wise women,
Someone has consulted me on a question and I couldn't find a direct
answer, although we can both provide lots of support no matter what this
mother decides...
Here is the question:
If a mom has nursed her biological child for almost a year, and plans to
adopt an
infant, is there any way (for instance weaning the one-year-old
temporarily or partially) to get the body to produce colostrum for the
new baby? Since most of the information on relactation concerns
breastfeeding the same baby or an older baby, there is no indication of
what the milk composition is at various points of relactation... Since
literature on tandem nursing usually assumes there was a pregnancy, this
isn't helping us either. It seems fair to assume that the body would go
on producing "toddler" milk, but is there a point at which the milk
changes to adapt to the new baby's breastfeeding patterns, besides (I
assume) becoming more plentiful?
I'm just curious, but the mother is probably eager to have information
on this.
