Hi All,
It sounds more like this 5 mo old is doing normal 5 mo old behavior, just to
the extreme. Most 5 mo olds will pull off the breast at any distraction
(real or sometimes imaginary) and they do tend to forget to let the breast
go. :) ALl three of mine did this. The key for mom is to keep a finger
ready to break the latch as soon as he starts to pull away. This will
reduce the trauma her already sensitive (from yeast) breast is receiving. I
would hazzard a guess that before the yeast problem, the baby was nursoing
fine, which, to me anyway, would rule out a dysfunctional suck. If this is
not the case and BF has been traumatic all along, then there may be
something wrong. Also, have baby and mom been visually cleared (by MD, Ped
or LC) of thrush? If not, baby may still have it in his mouth and could be
using the breast and his pulling away action to "scratch" his palate if it
itches or feels yucky.
Just some thoughts...
Hope they help!
