I agree with what Alicia said on this issue.
Also for those of us who work in 1st world countries it may at times be a
little difficult to notice the benefits of breastfeeding if one doesn't look
closely.
If one takes the time to notice it is obvious that the formula feed babies
are sick more often but one can lose site of this b/c although I'll see
almost exclusively ABM fed babies while on call tomorrow its easy to assume
this is b/c most babies are abm fed.
We do see some breastfed babies who get sick, for example of the handful of
babies I took care of during residency, as their primary doc I had 2
breastfed babies get ear tubes.
Sometimes one has to stop and think about things. I've heard the line of
"lots of babies are formula fed and do well" several times. Of course the
breastfed ones do better.

"I believe that our greatest hope lies with the next generation
of physicians (although I'll keep working on the older ones). Regards,
Alicia Dermer, MD, IBCLC."

Hopefully I fit in that "next generation" as the AAP recommendations came
out early in my career. Can we define "next generation" as those of us who
have never seen invasive heamophilus disease nor exchange transfusion and
no of no other sleep position for babies than non prone?
