Why is formula always the first responce to fixing any problem with a breastfed baby?  I agree with another poster I think the doctor does not have an understanding of the formula or the mother misunderstood what the doctor was telling her. 

I second your thought on overproduction. That is the first thing that came to my mind upon reading your post.
