In the past 2 months I have had several cases of full term, otherwise healthy babies who were born with no ability to suck.
Two of them developed weak, marginally functional suck within 2-3 days after birth, and began feeding on the Haberman feeder, one would not suck even on a Haberman, and we sent him home on a straight yellow nipple. This was after multiple failed attempts at bare breast, breast with nipple shield, finger feeding, and the Avent bottle. My co-worker has been following 2 of these kids for several weeks now as outpatients. None of these babies has made the transition to breast yet, and one has weaned altogether and is formula-feeding.
In my experience (working with babies since 1987) this is extremely rare, and I am puzzled about possible causes. Has anyone else experienced this recently? I wonder if there has been a change in the meds being used in epidurals, or something else in L&D process. I talked briefly with one of our L&D nurses who is a friend, and she said they have changed epidural meds, but this was done about 6 months ago.
