Good evening ~
I received a call today from mom who is nursing a 5 month old boy. I have
her permission to post her question to all of you experts.
The breastfeeding itself is going very well, she has no desire to quit, and
her pediatrician is supportive of her decision to breastfeed. The problem
is that her son has severe eczema--face, scalp, back, limbs. She said it is
so bad that lab techs have a hard time finding veins for drawing blood for
labwork, and the scales and crusting is about an eigth of an inch thick on
his scalp. His pediatrician checked for allergies with a RAST test, and
came up "high" on dairy and egg. He is currently taking three meds--
Griseofulvin, Zrytec, and some cephalosporin. He is being seen by a
dermatologist as well as the pediatrician. The poor kid is miserable... The
mom is coping.
The mom has been as vigilent as possible with her own diet, eliminating
the "obvious" dairy products and eggs and reading the fine print on labels
looking for whey and casein, egg whites, etc. She has seen some improvement
with the baby's skin condition while on this elimination diet.
Her question is this-- Is the milk that she has pumped and frozen, while
still eating dairy/egg products, still going to contain the proteins that
apparently trigger the eczema? In other words, does freezing change the
protein at all? Should she dump it to be on the safe side?
She also asked for any websites, references or support groups that might
have information for her.
She is a dedicated and determined mother and looking for help, ideas and
support.

Thanks,
Kirsten RN, IBCLC
