Dear Friends:

Barbara Morrison, Susan Ludington-Hoe, and Gene Cranston-Anderson (may they
live long and prosper!!) published an article in 2006 JOGNN 35; 709-716.
 "Interruptions to Breastfeeding Dyads on PostPartum Day 1 in a University
Hospital." This study was done before the hourly rounding.

The average number of interruptions was 54 in 12 hours. Half the time
mothers spent alone with their babies was for 1-9 minutes. How in the hell
can a woman bare her breasts and explore breastfeeding with her new baby
when there is a steady stream of traffic going in and out of her room?
 Medical and nursing staff were the number one cause of interruptions;
dietary and housekeeping were number 2; visitors and family were number 3.

Now hourly rounding is added to the list of interruptions....I've yet to
have a mother that I've seen in private practice that didn't complain about
this.

It's a miracle that anybody breastfeeds after birth in a US hospital!!

warmly,
Nikki Lee
