You might be interested that there has been a study done in Montreal
recently, which got a fair amount of publicity, it looks like. (Five half
columns in two stories in La Presse--one of Montreal's major newspapers, I
don't know if anything appeared in other newspapers--on September 30 and 5
columns, but only 1/3 page on October 1). It showed that women who are poor
are far *more* affected by discharge packs than women who are not. They
were 2.5 times more likely to stop breastfeeding in the first two months
after birth than those who did not get it. The study also shows, in
passing, that rooming in, flexible feeding and the usual also increased
duration of breastfeeding.

The article points out, incidentally, that it is against ministry of health
rules in Quebec, for hospitals to give out these packs (exception--formula
feeding mothers, aaaggggh!), yet 41% of the breastfeeding women in the study
got them.
