I think peer counselors are a wonderful thing. If well trained their are a
god send to the lc as they can handle the simple questions and leave her
time for the more complicated cases. THey also have the advantage by
definition of being culturally similar to the women they are helping and
their role modeling is thus invaluable. We had two in the inner city clinic
I used to work it and I feel they get part of the credit in the rise of the
breastfeeding initiation rates from 36% to 71% over 2 years.
