I am an LC in private practice, and LLL Leader, in NYC. I am new to
Lactnet, and have enjoyed the posts very much. About language: I believe
ABM refers to artificial babymilk, not breastmilk; I think it is used by
INFACT and other international groups. I like the term and use it at LLL
meetings, as well as the term "artificial feeding" which I use to mean
formula. We should consciously attack the term formula, because it sounds
scientific and personalized, and it is neither. Some terms I dislike:
dyad for couple, and the overuse of "client" when the term mother can be
used. Dyad reminds me of the medical overuse of Latin terms; I think most
people realize we don't mean father (or partner) and mother. I consciously
use "mother" rather than client to avoid the over-reliance on experts for
parenting advice which has become increasingly prevalent today. I also
dislike "lay breastfeeding group (or counsellor)" to refer to, usually,
LLL. Are LC's priests, and LLL the recipient of church teaching?
