"I don't know why some women "overproduce" but true overproduction must be
extremely rare."

Kathy,
It may be, but you'd never know it by reading the lactnet. A while back I put
out a query on this topic because I had a patient that was thinking of bottle
feeding her third. Why? She had severe over-production problems with the other
two and didn't think she could handle it this time.

I put out that query at 9PM and by the time I got up at 6AM I had received 11
responses...many from Australia.....who knows why. Maybe just because they are
awake when I sleep? Maybe they have a genetic predisposition? I don't want to
guess.

At any rate, responses and treatment varied from "don't express or pump" to
"express for comfort".....to "wear nipple shields to decrease stimulation"...to
"sage 1/4 tsp. every day as an herbal treatment" to "feed on one side at a
time."

Maybe it is not so rare but we tend to underplay its significance? There is
certainly a body of work out there on colic in babies who deal with
overproduction/ hyperactive letdown.
