I'd check to see if anything has been or could be cultured from the open
lesion. Gentian violet can be painful on an open lesion. This does not sound
like thrush. Be aware, too that this may be a herpes lesion. Does baby have any
sx in the mouth? One of my good friends little one had a case of "hoof and
mouth" at about 14 months and it was painful for both of them until it was
correctly diagnosed and treated.
