The breastfeeding community would feel much more comfortable if a legal expert were to remain in the employ of the UNICEF home office in NY, even if his or her job description were to change from directly providing assistance in gaining WHO Code legislation to coordinating a network of legal experts in the country offices. I personally agree that the job of providing legal assistance to breastfeeding protection through control of agressive and misleading formula and infant food marketing is too large for one person; but disagree that no central assistance is needed. In light of the HIV pandemic, protection of exclusive breastfeeding is more urgent than ever. Government resources, especially in developing nations that are hardest hit, are at their most strained. Therefore, this important position should not be eliminated.

Thank you,
Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC New York City
