Dear Friends:

The lilac bush planted over my last baby's placenta died.

The midwife I apprenticed with back in the 1970s would freeze quarter-sized
pieces of it to give to mothers at risk of hemorrhage. It is high in iron,
which might be one more reason for animals to eat theirs. It is used to make
shampoo by a company, although I don't know if it is still made.

The pharmaceutical companies would regularly come to the maternity unit to
collect the frozen ones. I wonder if they still do.

My teen-aged daughter was horrified/mortified to bring a friend home and
open the freezer to find food, only to discover bags of frozen human milk
(mine) and a frozen placenta.

warmly,
