I LOVE the way lactation consultation and advocacy draws from an entire
universe of experts.<

Exactly!
And this is why so many of us are concerned about the medicalization of our
profession. With the new prerequisites for taking the IBLCE exam starting in
2012, it is becoming more and more difficult for non-nursing candidates to
qualify. Of course it is essential to have hospital-based IBCLCs. We also
need help for mothers and babies after they leave the hospital, and IBCLCs
who come from a wide range of backgrounds provide a wonderful resource for
the community. Lactnet is proof of this. Imagine Lactnet without our
nutritionists, our PTs, our social workers, our anthropologists or our
teachers - not to speak of our nuclear engineers!
