Fio,

You wrote that formula may well have "bad" things in it. Here in the USA, we
wouldn't use the word "bad." We use the word "novel" ingredients or else we
get sued. I really like that word; it covers a multitude of sins. The FDA
has classified MSG as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). If you go to the
website http://www.nomsg.com/sources.html
you will find a listing of hidden sources (since labeling laws are such in
the USA that you need a college degree to know what is exactly in the food you
eat). Calcium caseinate or sodium caseinate as well as hydrolyzed protein are
listed as definite sources of MSG. I do believe if you look on a can of
infant formula you will see these items lists. There is a long list of "possible"
sources of MSG with carrageenan, whey protein, whey protein isolate, soy
protein, soy protein isolate on that list. I do believe these possible hidden
sources are listed on various cans of infant formula.

If you want a thorough understanding of the FDA position on MSG, you might
consider the following website
http://vm.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/msg.html

We should care what ingredients are in infant formula. But the truth is that
man cannot make a substance to feed our babies that is as safe and as
nutitionally and immunologically superior as the milk that is produced by a human
mother. Should infant formula exist, other than in a pharmarcy, since the
imitation of it's ingredients makes this substance as risky as the giving of drugs?
I think it is time for people to consider that the idea of infant formula is
backwards thinking. It's time to safeguard our future generation by advocating
that the only alternative to not breastfeeding is human milk banking.
