Why do many HCPs add solids to encourage weight gain? In general, adding
solids or adding formula usually results in *substituting* sub-optimal foods
for breastmilk. I like to think about 1 Tbsp. of applesauce, for example,
filling the stomach space that could otherwise be filled with that same
amount of breastmilk. Which is more completely digested and metabolized
<g>? Do *not* get me going on my soapbox about this!

While this baby may show all appropriate external developmental skills for
starting solids, the gut may not be ready and spitting up is one way of
saying so. Has this mother tried nursing more frequently and perhaps
offering the same breast several feedings in a row? Has she tried this for
several days in a row without other supplemental foods in the picture? He's
crawling, pulling up and cruising around furniture...yes, that activity
level requires calories, but if he were "starving", he wouldn't have the
energy to do all of that.

I only suggest the above if she's in a situation where she is feeling the
need to *do* something. What you report is all forward weight gain, albeit
slower than the pediatrician seems to like. Is the mother an Incredible
Hulk or petite? What about the father? I would feel comfortable watching
the baby, not the growth charts, unless some other red flags appear. With
continued weight gain and even occasional plateaus, I would not worry. With
no other pertinent symptoms, why are they ordering a test for CF? (Maybe
just stay out of the peds office for awhile <g>?)

This response is incomplete since I need to satisfy my nursling and can't
type legibly with one hand. Food allergies may also be present...cow's milk
protein, gluten, soy, etc. via mom's diet, but that's another ballgame you
may not want to play.

Just my <$0.02,
