Hello dear Lactnetters -

In light of recent questions that have been raised on Lactnet about various
disease and public health issues as they intersect with breastfeeding, I
wanted to be sure everyone is aware of the CDC breastfeeding website. CDC
addresses breastfeeding from many perspectives; breastfeeding is a specific
priority within the Maternal and Child Nutrition Branch of the National
Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Many of the questions which have been raised on Lactnet in recent weeks,
including breastfeeding prevalence, West Nile Virus, SARS, smoking,
Hepatitis, and others are all addressed by CDC. Most of these issues are
part of the FAQ section of the breastfeeding website. Issues that are not
part of the FAQ section can be quickly addressed with an email to me. I
often respond to questions from people who have found that when they can
respond to someone doubting compatibility of breastfeeding and [fill in the
blank] with a statement from "CDC" indicating otherwise, their statements
are better received.

Please feel free to use the CDC breastfeeding resources as needed. The
website also has links to many other national organizations supporting
breastfeeding, as well as ways to access various publications and materials.
The FAQ section can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/faq.htm
Please note that all statements in this section are documented with
references, most of which can be accessed via clicking directly from this
page. The main breastfeeding page can be found at
http://www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding

Please keep in mind that the main objective of this site is to provide
public health information and resources, as such it is not very 'sexy' and
is relatively low-tech. CDC puts forth a great effort to ensure that web
materials can be accessed from systems using older web browsers without
flash and other multimedia capabilities.

I hope this website is helpful to you.
