Hi Ingrid,
What is mom's milk supply like? Is it low or maybe overabundant? I did not
see that mentioned in your post. With fairly new babies, the ones that are
very very fussy and pulling at the breast and crying, are usually hungry
and reacting to a very low flow of milk. Other times, the baby may be
overwhelmed by the too abundant supply and flow.
Airway issues come to mind first for your particular case. Do you see or
hear any unusual sounds or symptoms that are worse during or right after
feeding? Certain positions the baby insists to be in? Like having his head
very flexed? Even an increased resp rate during or after feedings.
Torticollis?
Could it be some sensitivity to something in mom's diet (not a common
thing). I will usually ask mother about her food choices, and especially if
she eats a large quantity of some particular food, like nuts or milk or
wheat or citrus, or fish or shellfish. Look for the usual common allergens
and see if she eats a preponderance of that. What about reflux? Not as
common as some people make it to be, but certainly could be this baby's
problem?
