Looking for input. I am the Regional Lactation Consultant for the urban part of our health authority. We have held weekly Breastfeeding Support Groups (BFSG) at 10-plus sites in the urban area and 9 sites in the rural part of the region for over twenty years. These groups are facilitated by Public Health Nurses and many follow a model whereby mother-infant pairs and seen one-on-one by the PHN (albeit in a large group setting) where by infants are typically weighed and mother's can ask questions etc.prn. We have followed this model for over twenty years with the groups who do weigh-ins seeming to be more well attended than those who do not weights routinely. This may be a geographical variant as the more rural areas tend to have lower numbers of births in their area. There have been questions with respect to documentation standards for the PHNs seeing clients in BFSG which have led us to ponder the role of the RN in BFSG and what model of care we should be following.

I wonder if anyone out there has established or reviewed their RN-facilitated BFSG model and has any wisdom, guidelines, protocols, etc. to share. I appreciate your input.

Kindest thanks,
Lisa
