Yes, Karleen -- lots of mother-to-mother counselors know lots about lactation. I was one of them, too, before I decided to sit the IBLCE exam after 8 years as a mother-to-mother counselor (who regularly referred to IBCLCs when I felt a case was out of my league). And I would be offended if someone had suggested to me then (as now) that I don't know my field.

I am equally irked when someone suggests that I should expect to offer my professional services for free, because I once provided a related service on a volunteer basis.

Lactation professionals fall on the Bell Curve -- just like anything else that can be measured. Some of us are great, some of us are lousy, and most of us fall in the middle somewhere. Same is true of mother-to-mother counselors, pediatricans, midwives ... lawyers, clergy, plumbers and florists. We are merely human.Liz Brooks, JD, IBCLCWyndmoor, PA, USA
