Sam - Although I can thankfully say that I've never seen a baby measured
in the way you described, I've seen some pretty awful things done to
babies. Until only a few weeks ago (when a new educator came on board) we
still had on our newborn orders that each infant was to have a tube passed
through both nostils to "confirm patency of the nares!" I'm only slowly
getting nurses to understand that it isn't realistic to expect babies to
breathe "perfectly" before the 1 minute apgar. As it is - one retraction,
one bit of nasal flaring or grunting and it's off to the nursery. The new
educator gave a class on the long term effects of noxious stimuli on the
newborn, immature brain that seems to be getting people's attention.
Here's hoping for gentler births! Deb Ray, RNC, IBCLC
