<Has anyone else noticed this Murphy's Law of BF - heavy moms get heavier
>while BF and thin moms get thinner? I've always wondered about that.
>Probably has something to do with how their bodies metabolize.>

Pat,

I have no doubt metabolism figures heavily. But speaking as one of the
former kind of moms, 4 decades after the fact, I can also realize that my
tendency to put on weight also stemmed from my familial food habits and
taste and portion size preferences, which were learned habits.

Those food habits came in to play not only in response to the stress of
hunger, but in response to practically every other thing in life that
seemed stressful and tension producing to me. (And we all know that every
day, parenting has plenty of that.)

I was reared with food as a tranquilizer and a reward for good behavior
(mom's approach), but also with the threat of withholding supper, or at
least dessert, for punishment, even punishment for not cleaning my plate
of the veggies thereupon (dad's contribution).
Plus "I'd better eat while I have the chance so I won't get hungry while
I'm out on errands (Grandma's contribution from back in the days when
there was no fast food or vending machines in the world!)

So considering myself a good mommy for all that I did for my babies, and
my hubby, I rewarded myself copiously, with just a little extra portion
here, or a second helping there (to avoid having leftovers or food going
to waste, I let it go to waist!), and a frequent serving of desserts to
everyone, especially me.

To add to that, the heavier I becamed, the more sedentary I felt, and
with all the little helpers, it was simpler to send them on little
errands throughout the house, therefore getting up less frequently and
moving less in general myself.

So, I agree with the metabolism as one part of it. But I see from making
excuses about my food habits and sedentary tendencies all my adult life,
I know where it leads, and what effort it is taking to reverse the
trend.

Just maybe, some of those thin moms get thinner because they respond to
stress and challenge with a different pattern of eating and body
movement!

Jean (good to be back to my calorie-free treat of LN after a minor, one
week computer breakdown!)
