My observations of UAE nationals dealing with loss are very different to my
experiences home in Australia.
I was once in a local hospital when an infant arrived in ER with septicaemia
and died a short time later. Within 20 mins I watched over a dozen men and
women arrive at the hospital and congregate around the parents of the baby.
Separately-the women in one room and the men in the hall. I watched 14 men
surround this father, holding him and touching him and weeping with him, for
a more than considerable amount of time.
It was one of the most moving experiences I have ever observed, and differed
so markedly to my own experiences of responding to loss where people outside
of the closest circle of friends and family tend to stay away, offering
gestures from afar to allow space and privacy (and avoid awkwardness too of
course).
