This is a very common occurance in the South Texas area with Hispanic
mothers. I believe in stems from the fact that mothers know that breastmilk
is the best yet are not ready to put the baby to the breast. It may be the
perceived sexual aspect or with our Hispanic culture the breasts do not
"belong" to the mother or baby. I believe the area needs to be explored more
to help overcome this problem. These women are very distressed when the milk
production declines and what to know how to increase the milk supply yet are
not always willing to nurse the baby.
