Ruth Lawence's new book quotes the AAP recommendation for the mom to pump
and dump for 12-24 hours after a 2g dose. On the other hand, pregnant
women are given week-long courses of the oral drug without blinking an eye
(at least my sister's OB did and says it's common practice), which would
surely result in a much higher blood level in the baby at a more
vulnerable stage of development. Lawrence goes on to say that the milk
contains 1.3% - 75% of what would be a therapeutic dose for the baby, if
the baby needed the drug.
