Our hospital recently began using Duramorph for pain control in our c-section patients. I really have been amazed at how much better these moms do post-surgery. They pull the epidural and all IV's before bringing mom to the floor from recovery. (less fluids via IV may mean less edema?) These mom's are up and moving, eating, and ready to interact with their babies very quickly post-surgery. From my understanding it is a long-acting injection of Morphine, that lasts 12 hours. They than go on to oral pain meds. I haven't noticed any additional problems with breastfeeding. The main side effect is intense itching in some patients. In fact many of these moms do really well because of the level of pain control they get as compared to PCA and CAD pumps. (I'm sure as with any medication there are some effects on the baby as far as sucking.)
