Kate Hallberg has described Colorado altitude as being harsh. At
Steamboat Springs, my elder daughter at age 24 got altitude sickness
after going even higher on the ski lift. There are numerous reasons for
altitude sickness and dehydration is one very big factor according to
the emergency room doc we called. But due to the less oxygen
environment the body is busy making more red blood cells. I wonder if
due to both busyness and dehydration (our condo had a humidifier on each
level) and the body using its fluids to make more red cells, this could
happen in susceptible women who are not drinking enough fluids or
resting. Once back home at sea level, the extra energy from the extra
red cells is always terrific for me. I wonder if the busyness just
continued when back home and the moms activity level did not wear off,
perhaps from the extra red blood cells. Too bad, marathon breastfeeding
could have probably restored their supply.
