I am looking for hypoglycemia protocols for healthy newborns from teaching hospitals within the U.S. Could those of you that have access to these please send me a copy? I am currently working at a hospital which has protocol for the at risk infant* which requires glucose screening within the first 2-3 hours to be equal or greater than 40mg/dl. If the glucose is greater or equal to 40, then 4 consecutive ac (before feeding) glucoses need to be checked. These 4 in a row are required to be above 50mg/dl. I have been asking out neonatology department for the evidence behind this protocol and so far no one has showed me the evidence. Babies are getting numerous heelsticks and many are not meeting criteria. Most hospitals go by the 35-45 numbers which are the AAP (2011) guidelines. I would appreciate any input from you all.
*small-for gestational-age, large-for-gestational age, late-preterm infants, infants of diabetic mothers.
