I appreciate all the posts on the 5% figure. We have hashed thru this before
but still that figure gets cited in articles alot, even bf friendly
articles. I agree with Pat we need to work on fixing the very large percent
of dyads that "fail" at bf due to "mismanagement" (for lack of a better
word) or downright sabotage, or sacrificing on altars. However I think it
would be helpful to know some percentages. Remember when Marie had tons of
data saved on oversupply. Maybe lots of us LCs can go thru our data and try
to find out what our percentages really are. I am just going to guess - I
have been employed at a particular hosp just at 3 yrs. We average 720 births
per year. 50 - 70% bf, so I'll take 60%. I am remembering maybe 10 at most
moms with what I would call primary lactation failure. So this is 720 x .6 =
432 bf'ers per year. 10 "bf failures" divided by 432 = .023 or 2.3 percent.
Well we could all do this if we kept records, which I do and could try to
calculate this "one day". I would just look at a year at a time.
