The baby with Turners Syndrome who has had chronic blood in the stools was
tried experimentally for a week on hypoallergenic formula. I had advised
mom to pump to maintain supply just in case it didn't change much. Baby
still had blood in stool during formula trial. The blood in the baby's
stool has never impacted her growth. She is still averaging >1oz/day, a
rate of growth I'm pleased about due to the maximization of her growth
potential being a critical issue due to the Turners and to her heart defect.
The pedi and gastroenterologist are ok about the return to bfg as the trial
suggests it's not the food, but something going on in her GI tract. So long
as it doesn't affect growth, everyone is just going to try to not get too
concerned about the appearance of the blood. Baby has dx case of GER and
now on Prilosec which has helped her fussiness some.

I read something on Medscape the other day about GER in adults. It talked
about the fact that some adults have the sensation of heartburn but don't
actually have evidence of acid reflux. They talked about the sensation
being vagally mediated. I wonder about these babies with GER. The Turners
baby was breech, with her head so wedged she has mild torticolis and also is
in a hip cast to straighten that out. She was really compressed and had a
very tough birth. I have suggested that some work with a PT and a cranial
sacral therapist be initiated to try to use massage to address the muscular
rigidity issues. If the vagal nerve is somehow compressed, maybe that can be
released with body work. I don't pretend to know how all this works, but I
do know I experience great relief from massage and accupuncture, and I
believe massage is a gentle and humane way to treat muscle tension in
infants. This poor little girl faces heart surgery in 4 weeks now that she
is over 10lbs. The only thing that's working (thank God) is the bfg.
