I knew a family 20 years ago whose children were all in the 30+ pound range by 9 months or so.  I believe her baby at that time was about 36 pounds!  All the older kids were normal size, though tall, as elementary school age kids.  Weight, as a sole indicator of a problem, can be deceiving.  I think
we shouldn't be surprised that  docs will respond this way, though, since childhood obesity has become a significant problem receiving much media attention in the US.  You know the pendulum tends to swing too far the other way when correcting a trend.
