I had experience with a client whose adoted baby had been hospitalized for
mastitis and a resulting abcess between 4 and 6 weeks of age. The baby was
given antibiotics and the abcess was drained surgically. She was very sick
for two weeks and when I met her had a periareolar scar about 1/2 of an inch
long. And, yes, the adoptive mother did breastfeed when the baby was placed
in her home at 12 weeks of age with no difficulty in transiton to the breast
with an SNS, the baby acted like she had breastfed from day one.
