If any of you have a moment, please share with me the most concise answer
you would use and what data you would offer to back up your answer. <<<

I have been mulling this question over, on and off, since Denny posed it. I
have several suggestions, mindful of the fact that Denny wants a concise
answer- presumably one to keep in our back pocket for future reference...

Firstly, if the doc simply said the exact statement she quoted, ("the two
added ingredients that make up Lipil are exactly the same as what's in
breastmilk") and nothing more, with no real context, one might say:-

"Actually, it is NOT exactly the same...and problems are starting to be
reported about the Lipil. I will send you a reference about that if you
like..."

If it seemed like the doc was trying to imply that Lipil formula is better,
as good as, or whatever, I might say firmly:
"I have heard people say that- but of course Lipel formula is actually not
close to equal to human milk AT ALL... I can send you some references..."

In my opinion, it is not even as important WHAT we say as HOW we say it.
Since it is obvious that Denny (and a lot of the rest of us, IBCLCs and
others...) keep up on the literature on this subject, and it is VERY likely
that the doctor does not, we can know that in this instance we are the more
knowledgable of the two. Could we perform surgery? No ...Diagnose
non-breastfeeding related problems? No, of course not. But in this
narrowly defined topic, for gosh sakes- we know more than they do! Let's
take our stand and square our shoulders and look 'em right in the eye, and
show what we know. We are giving out accurate information. Who can find
fault with that? (except those who stand to profit from misinformation... -
an issue for another day...sigh)

What to send? See the reference in Marsha's recent post:- let 'em read
it!!! (if not the whole excellent post itself.)
"An extensive review of this topic was published in the Journal of
Nutrition, November 1998 Supplement; Vol 128, Number 11S. It concluded that
there was not enough evidence to support the addition of these fatty acids
to formula."
