Campaign to buy formula for refugees
FAITH FILES . By GARY SOULSMAN . June 6, 2009

a.. Where is the milk to feed babies from Pakistan's Swat Valley?

It's a question for Dr. Sheerin Javed when she thinks of the 2.5 million Pakistanis displaced by the that nation's war with the Taliban.

Fearing for the survival of young children, the Landenberg, Pa., doctor and native of Pakistan has embarked on a campaign to raise $25,000 to provide powdered milk used as a baby formula in refugee camps.

"There is an urgency because of a shortage of funds to provide the milk," said Javed, executive director of Circle of Hands, a nonprofit devoted to interfaith and cultural understanding.

Circle of Hands and The Islamic Society of Delaware have raised $10,000 so far.

She's conducting the effort in conjunction with the Human Development Foundation of North America, which has helped more than 200,000 poor people in the four provinces of Pakistan. HDF was formed by the American-Pakistani community in 1997, as a gift to the people on the 50th anniversary of the country's independence.

Contributions should be made to HDF and sent to Circle of Hands, 240 Fern Ridge, Landenberg, Pa. 19350. To learn more, visit www.circleofhandsusa.org.
