<< soy discussion, organic vs: engineered >>
it's true, pat, its a difficult subject to get started on, but with the
tremendous "belief" in soy formula in my area, i think it is important to
know. many people that have very strict beliefs about what they eat, and
believe that breastfeeding is best, also believe that soy formula is "just as
good" because it is made from soy. doctor's here push use of soy formula to
fix just about anything or for the first choice of infant food. so i am the
only person who may be suggesting to many families that soy is not
automatically okay, and i personally point out that the various drawbacks of
soy foods (for infants) includes the genetic engineering component of
non-organic soy products. (soy is also one of the crops that takes the
highest levels of pesticides to be grown non-organically.)

and as valerie points out, about the companies who make a huge profit from
genetically engineered soybeans, who stands to profit? those who convince
parents that soy formula is magic and a terrific food stand to profit. sounds
familiar.

personally, i think the genetic engineering of food topic is much like the
HIV/AIDS and bf topic on LN; it doesn't appear to be relevant to many of us
(as you can see i disagree) and it appears to be difficult to understand and
hard to decide which position to take. but i feel quite certain it is going
to become more relevant to what we are doing as health professionals, and
maybe quite quickly. i have already seen a baby who could not tolerate dairy
OR soy formula at age three months.
