I sent this message but haven't see it in any of the posts, so I guess it got
lost in cyberspace (and not much of what I sending out has been making it
lately) so here I go again.

I just received a request for any articles or studies (from the Journal of Human
Lactation, etc.) dealing with weight loss in newborns in relation to
breastfeeding. This mother wants some ammunition in dealing with her local
hospital, since if any weight loss looks like it might go to 10 percent they
start pushing ABM (even if it needs to be done without parental permission). I
gave her some quotes from the Breastfeeding Answer Book and Nursing Your Child,
and I was wondering if there is something for "scientific" that would make
doctors pay attention to it. She also wonders if weight loss more than 10
percent is considered abnormal, therefore making the use of ABM justified.

On a personal note, I know my son went from 8 lb. 1 oz., to 7 lb. 1 oz. in less
than a week, and my FP didn't seem too concerned (then 2 weeks later my son
weighed 9 lb. 9 oz.) so what can I give this mother?

TIA
