Yes, I agree with Pat.  Anything oozing pus should be suspect now of MRSA.  
If it is (methicillin resistant staph aureus) mrsa she should not be in the 
nursery.  Hopefully, she will get the wound cultured.  This staph is prevelant 
here on the west coast as well.  If it is, she needs treatment with antibiotics 
ASAP.  One of my close friends' had this and it took a long time to clear up.  
Once you have acquired this you will always be a carrier.

keeping my fingers crossed that for her sake it is only a "spider bite"

As far as breastfeeding is concerned, she should be meticulous about 
handwashing, and not let the baby come into contact with this abcess.
